I have been working on some character sketches trying to come up with a style that I feel is best for this project. I am going to take these drawings and develop them in photoshop..

BENNY AND BOONE

This animal comic strip features Benny, a mischievous little bear who thinks he's a fierce grizzly. Boone, older brother to Benny, enjoys his leisure time, however taking care of Benny, is often a challenge. 

Is webcomic tells a story of getting lost in the wood and a link to activity pages which I found very educational. The colouring pages place the cartoon characters Benny and Boone in scenarios where they are lost in the woods. While the child is colouring they are also learning the rules of survival incase they are ever in this situation.

The use of characters to help children learn seems to be an effective method. Here are some examples where cartoon characters have been used to educate...

Sesame Street

For this brief I want to educate children on the awareness of camping safety. When I was a kid I watched Sesame Street, my favourite part of the show was the characters and stories. Young children don't have long attention spans. This TV program had a strong visual style, fast-moving action, humor and music. Having a fun way of learning helped to capture, focus, and sustain children's attention. I am going to develop my research further and come up with a concept that is going to be easy for children to take in information.

Posters for Kids

I had a look at some children's educational posters (aged 4-8) to give me an insight on the important elements required in getting the message across to a young learning age group.

Effective methods ;- Bright colours

Awareness brochures and poster

I liked these Mountain safety awareness brochures as they were clear and helpful. I am thinking of using a similar approach for my concept ideas.

I am going to develop my research further and incorporate illustrations in my work. I plan to design an awareness for children in the wood/mountains when camping.

Types of search and rescue..

There are different types of search and rescue which require different skills and services. I put together a mind map of the main areas of SAR and method of assistance used.

While researching I came across these safety posters/leaflets. The use of simple images and bold bright type is very affective.
